Probe Guide
Our thermocouple probes are defined by the numeric series. The
3000 series is for occasional, light duty. They do not have regular
handles, only small gripping surfaces we call a "light
handle". For many purposes, these economy probes are the best
choice if the usage level is light and the budget is tight. The
4000 series has three unique "no handle" probes. The AQA49122-K is perfect
for many applications that require a slender shaft and a narrow
insertion. This probe is designed for, and is ideal for, probing
hamburger patties. The AQA49140-K is very specialized for readings of
cooking oil vats. AQA49138 bare tip probe has fiberglass insulation
(safer than Teflon® for accidental exposure to extreme heat) and
useful for oven insertion for fixed location monitoring. The
5000 series is for repeated usage and commercial, heavy duty
applications. There are two main handle types, the heavy duty
handle and the bayonet handle.  The
heavy duty handle is best for durability and applications requiring
substantial pressure for penetration. The heavy duty handle is more
resistant to stress and bending forces. Heavy duty handles are
only found in the 5000 series of probes.  The
second handle type is the bayonet handle. This handle is better
for "carry around" surveys and portable thermometer applications
since it is lighter than the heavy duty handle. Bayonet handles
are typically used with "portable applications", meaning that they
are used with thermocouple instruments that are carried from location to
location for measurement purposes on a daily basis. Bayonet handles
are only found in the 5000 series of probes.
The
5000 series also has some specialized probes for griddle temperature
measurement, oven temperature measurement, dishwasher temperature
monitoring, hard frozen foods and other specialized needs. Most of the
5000 series that have handles also are fitted with coiled, telephone-style
cords. These cords are easier to handle, do not tangle, and extend to
48" for "reaching across" to measure.
